Just like there are different kinds of horses, there are also many different types of paddocks. If you’re wondering, ‘what is the difference between a turnout and a paddock?’, we’ve explored their different features and purposes so you don’t have to.

What is a Paddock?

Paddocks and pastures are commonly confused terms as they are very similar spaces. A pasture refers to a large green area filled with grasses where horses are kept. A paddock also refers to a large green area filled with grasses where horses are kept but is fenced and sometimes divided into smaller spaces.

Ideal for performance horses, paddocks are large enough for horses to wander around calmly, measuring approximately 20x30m. They have been designed as a permanent enclosure for multiple horses, incorporating many features such as shelters and water troughs.

With the ability to fence off a mixture of both bigger and smaller sections too, you can separate horses from each other with ease as well as protect certain pasture, maintaining optimal grazing throughout the seasons.

What is a Turnout?

A turnout is actually a type of paddock but is normally half the size, measuring approximately 15x7m. Still bigger than a horse stall, this smaller space is ideal for horses recovering from an injury, for exercising, or to help separate aggressive horses.

There is enough room for horses to walk, but not to run which enables those with injuries to give them time to heal and rest. The reduced area forces horses to stay calm too, which helps ease the aggression and reintroduces horses into the group.

Designed as more of a temporary enclosure for individual horses, they are normally used in riding stables or training yards. Enabling horses to stretch their legs, turnout paddocks help them feel less restless and get some fresh air too.
