Karlswood is the home of Olympic medal winning showjumper, coach and international horse producer Cian O’Connor.
At age 19, Cian O’Connor rode in his first Nations Cup for Ireland and has achieved a remarkable record in selections for the Irish team with a total of 133 appearances to date. He has gained international recognition for his coaching, helping aspiring riders reach their goals of National, Continental or potential World Champions.
Karlswood World Class Equestrian Facility is the high performance centre where Cian trains and coaches ambitious students. He is committed to delivering quality which is why he chose Norton’s Fencing for fencing installation.
What Were Karlswood’s Requirements?
As a state-of-the-art equestrian training facility, the client required fencing materials and installation in keeping with its design. There was no existing fencing in place as this was a new site, so they required precise positioning of the fence line. Also, the installation of the fencing needed to be phased over 2 years around the construction of the rest of the site.
How Did Norton’s Fencing Help?
Norton’s Fencing installed De Sutter Naturally, Royal Tropic Modern (3 & 4 Rail) Hard Wood Fencing in the paddocks and Royal Tropic Safety in the sand arena. Royal Tropic is a durability class 1 tropical hardwood which easily lasts up to 30 years and requires no maintenance; no dangerous nails or screws were used.
In total, we supplied and installed the following:
- 3360m of traditional post and 3 rail paddock fencing
- 900m of traditional stallion post and 4 rail paddock fencing
- 1470m 3 rail Royal Tropic Modern
- 300m 4 rail Royal Tropic Modern
- 26 x Royal Tropic Field Gates
- 460m of Royal Tropic safety on the grass arena
- 360m Royal Tropic Safety on the sand arena
The ground conditions were mildly wet, but this didn’t present the installation team with a problem. By carefully setting out all of the materials, we ensured that all posts were in the right position and precision fitting of posts and rails was undertaken by our highly trained installers. The most technically challenging part was installing the curved corners on the sand and grass arenas which required a continuous safety rail. To achieve this, every post and rail needed to be fitted separately with accuracy and precision.
We used our light weight tracked post driver, so we minimised damage to the ground in the paddocks and we phased installation of the fencing over a two-year period to suit the client’s needs. Starting in 2019 and completing in September 2022, there was up to 6 visits on site to guarantee consistency and care.
What Results Did Karlswood See from Norton’s Fencing?
This was Norton’s Fencing first project at Karlswood and we saw a successful installation resulting in a happy client. To maintain the original colour and finish of the De Sutter Naturally Royal Tropic Modern Fencing, they regularly oil the fencing. View the finished installation here.
